Appeal for affiliation and finance
January 2004
FAO: Trade Union branch secretaries,
We are writing to you on behalf of International Socialist Resistance (ISR), an international democratic organisation run by and for young people. As well as in England, Wales and Scotland, ISR has groups in many countries: such as Sweden, Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Northern and Southern Ireland, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, USA and more.
ISR campaigns
In recent months, ISR members have been campaigning locally and nationally on many issues including low pay, top-up fees, against the arms trade, and of course, against the Iraq War and occupation. We initated the school and college strikes against the war on Iraq last year and helped to organise many.
We are currently organisng a day of action against top-up fees in schools and colleges throughout the country. ISR members have been actively campaigning locally and successfully on many issues such as against privatisation, supporting industrial action taken by the Firefighters and more recently, the postal workers in their fight against job losses and for a decent wage with satisfactory working conditions.
We have also supported an ongoing campaign in support of Coca Cola workers in Colombia fighting against intimidation many are facing for being members of a trade union campaigning for better working conditions.
We have also recently launched our Low pay No way! campaign aimed at young workers. We are hoping to produce a low pay pack which will explain why young people should be members of a trade union, some ideas for organising in their workplace etc which we hope will get trade union support.
Appeal for affiliations donations
We have no big business backers and rely entirely on our members and supporters donations. Due to all of our members being young and the majority being at school, college and/or in low paid work we have very little money. To help us continue to build the campaigns outlined above we are writing to ask if your trade union branch would consider affiliating and/or sending a donation to ISR.
If you would like any more information about ISR, invite a speaker to a union meeting etc please dont hesitate in getting in touch. We hope to hear from you soon.
Yours in solidarity,
Clare James (ISR national co-ordinator)
Sarah Sachs-Eldridge (ISR national treasurer)
